This is a timeline of various political, legal, military, social, economic and environmental events that have occurred in South America (a region encompassing the states of Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana) that are relevant to libertarian socialism.
1900s
- 1931: The dictator of Chile is overthrown in a wave of strikes.[1]
- 1977: Sugar workers in Guyana strike in protest of wage theft.[2]
- 1979: FEJUVE, a federation of local assemblies is formed to provide support for people in the face of poverty, lack of access to essential services (such as water, electricity, paved roads, sewage, garbage collection, education, medical care and so on) rooted in indigenous Aymaran concepts of mutual aid forms in the city of El Alto, Bolivia. Where around 40% of the cities population participates in the dual power organization.
- 1996: Teachers and students in French Guiana strike over economic and school conditions.[3]
- 1997: The ongoing Second Mapuche Uprising begins, as Mapuche across Chile have resisted environmental destruction and the theft of traditional Mapuche lands through militant and revolutionary tactics.
- 1999: Strikes and protests in Suriname force early elections in protest of the government's corruption scandals.[4]
- 1999: The Water War begins in Bolivia, as people resist efforts to privatize the countries water supplies.
2000s
- 2001: The legendary Argentinazo occurs, hundreds of workplaces are taken over and run according to the principles of self-management, strikes plague the country and people battled police in the streets in protest of a severe economic depression.
- 2002: The Esquel Anti-Mine Movement begins, residents of a small town try to block the construction of a gold mine.[5]
- 2003: The Gas War begins across Bolivia, as people protested the attempted privatization of Bolivia's massive reserves of natural gas.
- 2006: The Penguin Revolution in Chile sees high school students strike for education reform and free transportation.[6]
- 2008: Falkland Islander fishermen protest squid fishing license fee increase.[7]
2010s
- 2010: Chilean women occupy empty mine to protest job losses[8]
- 2011: Chileans force roll-back of price increase for natural gas.[9]
- 2011: The four-year long Chilean Winter begins as students fight the police for free education.
- 2011: Chilean copper miners' strike for bonus pay.[10]
