-Africa is the second largest and second most populated country in the world, with 1,200,000,000 people (or 16% of the worlds population). It's climate varies from scorching hot deserts, dry grasslands/savannah, vast rainforests, some milder grassland and even a few snowcapped mountains. It was the birthplace of humanity and held many advanced civilizations which were destroyed by [[Transatlantic Slave Trade|slave trading]] and european [[colonialism]]. However, most of Africa became independent from the late 1950s to early 1970s at a time of great [[World Revolution|global unrest]], but has since largely fallen under the control of large multinational corporations and was ripped apart by bloody civil wars (which have only recently ended), leading to the stereotype of an impoverish and backwards continent. But Africa has recently began to rapidly grow economically and infrastructure across the country is being improved, with a parallel growth of large progressive social movements and uprisings that aim to protect the environment, workers' rights, housing, water access, women's and LGBT rights, authoritarian governments and police brutality.
