This is a timeline of various political, legal, military, social, economic and environmental events that have occurred in Southern Asia (an area including the states of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives) that are relevant to libertarian socialism.
Before Common Era
- 3300BCE: The Indus River Valley Civilization forms.
1700s
- 1730: The Bishnoi Forest Campaign sees 363 sacrifice their lives and be killed by soldiers to save a forest from destruction.[1]
1900s
- 1947: Sri Lanka sees a general strike in response to British Imperialism, leading to its indepedence.[2]
- 1958: The Sri Lanka Transport Board begins its 21-year long experiment with self-management.
- 1958: The Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement begins in Sri Lanka.
- 1988: The Federation of Community Forest Users is established to protect forests in Nepal.[3]
2000s
- 2006: The Phulbari Anti-Mine Movement begins, as environmentalists try to stop the construction of a coal mine that would pollute water sources and farmland as well as displacing thousands of people.[4]
- 2010: Doctors in Sri Lanka strike over the poor treatment of elephants.[5]
- 2010: The Negombo Lagoon Campaign begins in Sri Lanka as fishers and environmentalists attempt to stop the construction of a seaplane platform.[6]
- 2011: The Arab Spring spreads to the Maldives, leading to the fall of president.[7]
- 2012: 60,000 fishermen from across Sri Lanka refuse to take their boats out in protest against rising fuel prices.[8]
