Contradictions of Liberalism

This article outlines the contradictions of liberalism, or the ways in which liberal governments contradict their own values.

Contradictions

• The United States of America, the largest liberal country in the world, currently has one of the the largest prison populations (inflated by largely nonviolent drug offenses) and also provides military aid to 73% of the world's authoritarian regimes.
• The British Empire preached liberal values whilst it stole a quarter of the world's land and ran its colonies like military dictatorships.
• Liberalism repeatedly falls into dictatorship. This has been experienced in Germany, Turkey, Hungary, Thailand, Guatemala and Chile.
