A list of societies which follow anarchists models of governance or economics, past and present. (Note: Forager societies, intentional communities, protest camps, co-operatives, and squats are not included). We have categorised these societies into four kinds:

  • Anarchist Societies are societies built with a anarchist ideology in mind, in that they have successfully abolished coercive hierarchies in their communities.
  • Anti-Authoritarian Societies are societies that have successfully abolished coercive hierarchies in their communities but do not explicitly espouse anarchist politics.
  • Participatory Societies are societies that have abolished coercive hierarchies for some of the population.
  • Autonomous Societies are self-governing societies that have libertarian features but fall short of fully participatory decision-making.
