The South Carolina Commune refers to a period of political radicalization and unrest that aimed to built a free society for African-Americans in South Carolina, USA following the American Civil War, occuring between 1868 and 1874.

Achievements

Some of the achievements of the South Carolina Commune include:

  • Creation of black-controlled churches
  • Construction of institutions to assist deaf and mentally ill people
  • Creation of a public education system and construction of over 100 schools
  • Provision of Healthcare assistance to poor families
  • Banning of racial discrimination in public places
  • Elimination of corporal punishment
