The South Carolina Commune refers to a period of political radicalization and unrest that aimed to built a free society for African-Americans in South Carolina, USA following the American Civil War, occuring between 1868 and 1874.
Achievements
Some of the achievements of the South Carolina Commune include:
- Creation of black-controlled churches
- Construction of institutions to assist deaf and mentally ill people
- Creation of a public education system and construction of over 100 schools
- Provision of Healthcare assistance to poor families
- Banning of racial discrimination in public places
- Elimination of corporal punishment
