Founded in [[Timeline of Anarchism in Germany|1977]] after the re-emergence of the [[National Confederation of Labour (Spain)|CNT]] in the [[Second Spanish Revolution]], the new FAU saw itself as the successor of the [[Free Workers' Union of Germany]], which broke up in 1933 to avoid persecution from the [[Nazi Germany|new government]].

In 2007, FAU members organised a [[bicycle]] [[factory]] in and helped [[StrikeBike|takeover the bike factory]] and run it as a [[Workers' Self-Management|self-managed workplace]]. In 2009, FAU members protested the Babylon Cinema in Berlin after the unjust firing of workers, leading to the Berlin Court to forbid the FAU from calling itself a union. Romanian construction workers with the FAU also began a strike at the Mall of Berlin after they had not been paid for months.
